OH…HOUSE HUNTING…

So as some of you might know, Cody and I are going to be in Boston for a while. We originally thought we might be returning to San Diego after a year or so…once he got the office off of the ground..but it looks like we are here to stay for a while. He is doing phenomenal things and I couldn’t be more proud of him! That being said, we are at the point where we are tired of renting and really want a place to call home. We have jumped from place to place…feeling almost settled when we have to pack up and move again. With my love for decorating and his love of outdoor spaces, we are ready to have a place to call our own and really make our own.

We have been looking on and off for a while, but are now getting really serious about it. This has been one of the reasons it’s been a bit quite on the blog. As I am sure some of you reading this are aware, house hunting is TOUGH. Especially in a place like Boston where the market is extremely competitive and the real estate is very expensive. Very expensive. You pay for the location and I am totally okay with that because I love it here … as long as a girl can get a washer/dryer and two bedrooms without spending a fortune. Is that too much to ask, BOSTON?!

Anyway, since the market is so crazy – you literally have to get your offer right away without too much time to think about it. There is so much pressure! We are planning on placing an offer on a place today if all goes well… and I am so nervous.

One thing I can definitely say I have learned is to not get attached to a place and start mentally moving your furniture in it… we did that a couple of times and things just didn’t work out. So, here’s to hoping all things going well with this one and no one comes in with all cash or we get into a crazy bidding war. My anxiety cannot handle that.

I would really appreciate any tips from all of you homeowners out there! Please tell me I am not alone in this. 🙂

It’s funny how different it is there compared to here! My advice has always been to take your time but that’s not possible in bigger cities! Ryan & I were too rushed in our decision making and ended up with a house that we do not love which is a pretty awful feeling. I’m sure that next time we will be extremely thoughtful after learning from this experience. It IS nice to own & have the freedom to do what you want. I take this for granted. We’ve often said how we missed renting (like when things break) but then I’m reminded how wonderful it is to own as I’m currently painting our woodwork and didn’t have to have permission to do so.

I’ve had to remind myself 100x during this process not to compare house hunting here to what house hunting in oklahoma would be like! Haha! 🙂

I am so nervous that we will be too rushed and not love our home either – but I guess the great news is your next home search will be much better and you will have higher expectations. 🙂 I hope all is well, Jana!!

Good luck!!!! My husband and I bought an apartment last spring, and the whole experience was so stressful. But we found the place we ended up in the last weekend before we were going to take a break! 😉 Hopefully you’ll find your place soon!

Congrats on looking for a home to buy! Ironically, I just moved from the North East (NY) to San Diego! Two good tips for home buying are: 1) remember it’s impossible to find everything you want in one house, so don’t forget to prioritize what’s REALLY important to you versus what you just really wish you could have. 2) Do some research on your neighborhood and neighbors. Don’t stalk them, but wherever you end up you will be dealing with them for a long time! Best of luck!

How funny – you probably made the smarter move 😉 that San Diego sun sounds marvelous right about now!

Thank you so much for your tips – I think we have come to terms with knowing we can’t have everything we are looking for. We learned that quickly after seeing what our budget will get us in the city. 🙂 I am definitely going to look into researching the neighborhood/neighbors – great idea!
