I don’t know about you, but because I live in a downtown apartment where space is limited (and I mean LIMITED), I love an attractive piece of furniture that is also multi-functional.  Enter the X-stool.  Now the very first x-stools (also referred to as Dante, Curule, Luther, Savonarola) date back to Ancient Egypt and the time of King Tut but are more widely known for their presence in Medieval Italy.  Today we see many modern takes on this classic piece due in large part to its flexibility.  It can fit into any design style, varying in color, texture and material while maintaining the classic x-base.

This one illustrates the x-stools (with a Greek key detail) to add another level of interest to their already-beautifully styled dark console. (source)

Loving these blue and white striped x-stools at the end of each bed – you could even use them as nightstands! (source)

Nightstands?  Chairs?  Tables?  All of the above! I love the idea of using the stools as chairs for your dining room table.  Try also pushing three together to create a bench! (source)

Okay don’t get too excited – but the stools just made the cutest cocktail table you have ever seen! A simple tray and fresh cut flowers…and bam! You have a new cocktail table that can double as a side table or extra seating when you are hosting guests. (source)

Another great way to add another layer to your entry way console – these can be functional if you come home and need to take off your shoes, write a quick love note to your neighbor, read the mail, you get it…. (source)

Okay I just love these for the orange piping detail and had to share! (source)

I love the way Jen of Made by Girl placed her two x-stools on the other side of her coffee table, they could be used for extra seating or to hold her favorite fashion/decor magazines! I love the snakeskin! You can view the rest of her gorgeous home here.

Now I have to ask, where would you put your x-stool(s)?

Great post! Been looking for good ideas with which to fill my new home. Thanks for all the info and pics!

Thank you!! I hope you were inspired and good luck filling your home with items you love! 🙂

Bravo my dear!! Now, to answer your question, I would put mine on the side of my cocktail table that faces the balcony. Unobstructed view + adorable extra seating. Win-win 🙂 I’ve actually been looking for some lately, so let me know if you find any deals! xoxo

Yes! That would be the perfect spot in your place! Actually, just found some for my client that look identical to the Jonathan Adler ones from Ballard Designs. http://www.ballarddesigns.com/x-bench/10830 (so many pattern options…we went with a lavender velvet).

Miss you!

The teal number would be perfect in my corner home office. I’m always a sucker for nail head detail.

I am a sucker for nail heads as well! xo

Love #3 and #5! I guess I never realized how versatile these little guys could be! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Yes! They are a fantastic addition to any room really!
